Learn, Create & Grow at Your Own Pace
My art classes are designed to meet you exactly where you are. Rather than everyone creating the same artwork, each student works on their own projects, at their own level and pace, with individual guidance from me throughout the lesson.
You can bring your own ideas or follow one of my structured courses in Drawing, Acrylic Painting or Oil Painting. You are also welcome to explore watercolour, charcoal, linocut, mixed media and more. Choose the medium that excites you, and I’ll help you develop the skills and confidence to use it.
To keep the studio personal and intimate, each class is limited to just 10 students. This means I have time to work individually with everyone and tailor my teaching to your experience and goals.
Art history is also an important part of my studio. It is a true passion of mine, and I love bringing the stories, ideas and techniques of artists throughout history into our lessons. After all, we are standing on the shoulders of giants.
You are never too young or too old to begin your art journey. Whether you’re a complete beginner, an intermediate artist wanting to develop your skills, or simply someone who loves being creative and would like to meet new people in Munich over interesting and stimulating conversation, you are very welcome here.
I can’t wait to welcome you to the Lillian Gray Home Studio.

Meet your teacher
Hi, I’m Lillian Gray — artist, illustrator, art-history nerd, and founder of the Lillian Gray Art School.
I’ve worked across everything from oils and watercolour to printmaking, clay, spray paint and digital illustration. In 2016, I founded my art school in South Africa, now teaching 220+ students.
After moving to Munich in 2021, I wanted to create a safe creative space here: a beautiful, relaxed studio where adults can make art, learn, experiment and find their creative people.

Does the studio run all year?
The membership fee is an annual studio tuition fee divided into 12 equal monthly payments.Â
The studio operates for approximately 44 teaching weeks per year. The teaching calendar is published in advance for the year. It normally closes for three weeks over Christmas/New Year, three weeks during the August summer break, over Easter and on applicable Bavarian public holidays.
I can’t attend a regular class, now what?
Members may arrange a catch-up in another weekly studio class when space is available. Cancel at least 24 hours beforehand and use a catch-up session in another class within six weeks, subject to availability.

Is this a paint-along class?
Nope. Everyone works on their own project at their own level and pace. You might be painting a portrait in oils while the person beside you is working through my drawing course and somebody else is learning watercolour.

I have never done art before, is that ok?
You don’t need any previous art experience to join. Whether you’re an absolute beginner, returning to art after years away, or an intermediate artist wanting structured guidance, you’ll work at your own level and pace.

How and when can I cancel?
Membership is ongoing and may be cancelled with one month’s notice. You can manage your membership from the My Account page.
Art Mediums Taught

Drawing with Graphite Pencil
Learning to draw is essential as it serves as the foundation of all art forms, allowing artists to develop crucial skills in observation and expression. Mastering the basics of drawing enhances your understanding of shapes, proportions, and perspectives, setting the stage for more advanced techniques in various mediums. With my 12 guided lessons, you will establish a solid foundation in drawing, empowering you to confidently explore your artistic journey.

Charcoal Drawing
Charcoal drawing is an excellent medium for breaking free from perfectionism, encouraging artists to loosen up and embrace spontaneity in their work. This versatile medium is ideal for practicing gesture and contour drawing, allowing you to capture the essence and movement of your subjects with expressive line work. Once mastered, charcoal can also be used to create detailed and precise renderings, making it a valuable tool for any artist’s repertoire.

Acrylic Painting
Learning to paint with acrylics offers a modern and versatile experience. This dynamic medium can be applied thick to create more texture or thinned down for more delicate washes, allowing you to experiment with various techniques. It’s perfect for those who may lack patience, as it dries quickly and is ready to take home by the end of your lesson. As you explore the world of acrylics, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your own unique style.Â

Oil Painting
Learning to paint with oils, the medium of the masters, can initially feel daunting but offers an exhilarating journey as you master its unique characteristics. The long drying times allow for greater manipulation of colors and blending. The pure pigments allows you to create rich works filled with intense hues. As you develop your skills, you’ll experience the joy of transforming your canvas into ti

Linocut printmaking
Learning linocut printmaking introduces you to a captivating art form that combines carving and printing to create stunning, bold prints. You begin by designing your image, where stylized drawings work best. After that, you carve away the negative space, preserving the areas you want to print. Once the carving is complete, you can print your image multiple times and explore using various substrates, including materials like bags and T-shirts.

Watercolours
Learning to paint with watercolours allows you to explore the delicate interplay of color and transparency, creating soft washes and vibrant hues. This versatile medium encourages spontaneity and experimentation, as you can easily layer and blend to achieve stunning effects. As you develop your skills, you’ll enjoy the challenge of mastering watercolors while expressing your unique artistic voice through fluid and dynamic compositions.
