Original Mixed-Media Collage by Lillian Gray
The Weight of the Crown explores the delicate balance between power, vulnerability and the expectations placed upon women in leadership.
At the heart of the composition, traditional playing-card queens emerge from layers of torn paper, antique typography, delicate lace and gilded textures. Their regal imagery evokes authority, tradition and the historical roles assigned to women, while the fragmented composition challenges the idea that female leadership can be reduced to a single identity.
A contemporary woman’s face emerges from the darkness, offering a striking contrast to the decorative, idealised queens. Together, these figures reflect the tension between who women are, who they are expected to be and who they are becoming.
Gold suggests prestige and power, while the distressed surfaces, exposed text and fragile lace hint at the sacrifices, contradictions and invisible burdens that often accompany leadership.
Combining collage, painting and layered mixed-media techniques, The Weight of the Crown questions what it truly means to wear the crown in today’s world.
It is a celebration of female resilience, but also an acknowledgement that strength and vulnerability are not opposites — they often exist side by side.
